(And some lake fun)I have been having a lot of fun with my wedding blog (A Marriage of Passion and Style), but I'm back to posting a bit about my every day life!

My summer has been a lot of fun but I am more than excited for Fall. Autumn in Montana is a dream! This last weekend marks the end to most lake activities in the area, so my sister and I joined my boyfriend's family for a day on the boat. I love boating (whether it includes a motor or a paddle), but had never tried tubing behind a motor boat. My opinion now that I have? WTF?! Soooo not a fan so far! LOL. My sister took to it and went back for more, but after two goes, I was good and done. Why do people think it's fun?! Of course my boyfriend, who has been doing this since he was a kid, loves it! He's good at it too, performing all sorts of tricks and shenanigans. I let him and the others take their turns while I enjoyed the boat ride and my carton of wine. Ahhh...bliss!
I've been procrastinating on my blogs here for a bit. So much going on in my world! I'll update on St. Patrick's, Easter, and such soon. I have been dallying with a new blog idea though.

I'm obsessed with Weddings! So I have a new blog that will revolve around nothing but. Researching trends and looking up styles and falling in love with fashions keep me very happy, so I thought I'd put them all in a blog. Maybe a few of you will be interested too!

Find me here, at A Marriage of Passion & Style! And I'll be back around this blog soon too! :)E. Through an iron gate, down a tree-lined lane, past very noir street lamps, we made our way to the Daly Mansion. Marcus Daly purchased the property in 1886 and continually remodeled it until his death in 1910. His wife continued the process until it evoked a Georgian-Revival style. It's a beautiful home with more than 50 rooms. A perfect backdrop for a night of folly!
The Preservation Trust that keeps the house maintained and open to the public hosted the Gatsby Gala as a fundraiser. The ballroom held a live band and lots of room for dancing. (Or tripping and falling, which I used it for as well...LOL). The formal dining room boasted a huge spread of hour de'ourves and coffee. The gift shop was prepped for professional photos and the parlor hosted one huge coat rack of furs! Apparently everyone attending that night (a good 150 or so!) all raided their grandparents' closets for authentic outerwear.
Activities provided were bingo in the 3rd floor billiards room, 'horse racing' in the very masculine trophy room (complete with stuffed Grizzly and a tiger skin!), poker tables and fortune telling on the second floor and of course dancing! Prohibition couldn't touch us as we enjoyed a full bar too! My handsome beau got ushered into the costume contest, most likely due to a killer curled mustache. People just adored it! I garnered a lot of compliments with my bold jewelry and drapey dress. Felt good to get dolled up!
The Trust did a fantastic job of setting up this event. It was well organized, well decorated, and well attended! They even made paper lanterns, adorned with 1920s poster images. Set atop mirrored tiles and peacock feathers. :)
My man and I had a roaring good time and I hope they host this annually, for I'll readily return! Until then, I'll try and hit all of their other events including their murder mystery dinners in October! Spooky! I can see how this place would be very eerie in the fall.
I have long been in love with the 1920s era. Drop waists, short hair, beautiful art deco jewelry and art. The music, the dancing, the debauchery. I was in heaven with the movie Midnight in Paris! This Saturday, at a local mansion, a Gatsby-style gala is being held. My man will look like a gangster, and I his lady love.

Ha, you'd think I didn't 'kick the flu' judging by my absence in blog land! I'll have to fill you in on my lovely Valentine's day, but right now I'm focusing on fully recovering from my latest surgery. My sweet mom posted about it the other day, and got some very lovely comments back wishing me well. Thanks! If you find yourself in the same situation ever--where they have to remove large screws from your jaw bone--here's the best recipe I've found for getting over it and getting on with life:

Step 1: Lots of fluffy TV. This means a Say Yes to the Dress Marathon. Nothing can put a crooked smile on a half-numb girl like Randy at Kleinfelds talking of satin, chiffon, silks and sashes. Swoon!

Step 2: Magazines in bed. Magazines are like candy to me. I could buy them all. I was treated to a new Real Simple magazine the other day and spent a lazy afternoon, cuddled under blankets, flipping through it. Nice and relaxing. And that glossy cover absorbs much less accidental drool than, say, a newspaper.

Step 3: Cake. Yep, if there's one thing I crave in my Perocet-laden haze, amidst tooth pain and stiff jaw, it's cake. White cake. Plain frosting. Easy to eat and soothing to the soul.

Step 4: The most important step. Have your Mom near by. She is the BEST nurse I've ever known. She picked me up from the doc's and drove me home to the Mommy hospital. I slept in the guest room with vomit-bin nearby, pain meds on the night stand, and stuffed animal cow to cuddle. She supplied me with lots of liquid foods and DVR'd all those wedding shows I mentioned above. And watched them with me. She cleaned my wounds, and cleared my mind. She makes this so much easier.

1. HOT TUB! Nothing bakes out the germys quite like a good hot tub. I got to relax at my parents' house and enjoy theirs while they were on a winter vacation. Me and my rubber ducky lounged under the stars, near the snow drifts in 105 degrees of wonderful-ness. It shortens any illness I've ever had!

Ok, not my parents' hot tub....but this one sure is dreamy!

2. Faux fur blanket! Curl up, be warm, and feel fabulous. Though I had to drag this particular blanket away from my cat (which resulted in a few fights) it kept me cozy to sleep off that flu!

My favorite Black Friday purchase last year

3. Trashy TV! I turned my parents' TV to TLC and let it wash over me. Reality TV at it's weirdest and finest. My faves of course? Wedding shows! But in lieu of these, I pretty much watched whatever else came on. Sisterhood? Um, sure. Starter Wives Confidential? Weird....Toddlers & Tiaras?! I just wanna laugh at the absurdity!

4. Make yourself feel pretty! Amongst the mountain of tissues, the bags of cough drops and the sticky bottle of nyquil, I start to feel pretty unattractive. Nose turns red, hair just doesn't lay right, and it looks like I haven't slept in eons. My fix? New fingernails! Might sound silly but acrylics always make me feel a little classier so I threw on a new pair to transform my mood. Did the trick! Kept my mood up! :) (And they matched my bagel from yesterday morning. LOL)

I get so excited this time of year! Valentine's Day is coming, and it means I get to switch out all the decor in my home for fun pinks, reds and mauves; hearts, flowers and glitter. I have always adored this holiday since I was little. Since tiny valentines were put into tiny boxes at school parties. Since my Dad would buy me a heart of chocolates every single year. Since I felt like I always had a valentine (be it my friends or family) every year to celebrate with.

At the end of January, when I feel like I still have enough time, I'll start making valentines. I go through the stockpile of frilly scrapbook paper, doilies, stamps and glitter. And then of course forget to remember to consider the size of a standard envelope, and then have to make my own envelopes and then pay a crap ton for postage... Will I ever learn?! :)
I smile when I think of who he was. Courage like his is rarely exercised, and he showed how much change it can cause by letting it shine. The kind of strength he used, in the face of such anger and passion, shows just how much an Angel on this earth he was. He has my utmost respect and his dream of equality inspires me.

It's why I fight my local battle in Montana regarding the LGBTIQ community. (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, & Questioning.) We're all humans, and judgement based on sexuality--just like on skin color and ethnicity--is absurd. I've made myself a University Ally, being a safe place and a trustworthy person to listen and help students around me that may be struggling. This is the big issue I see in my world. I see a lot of hate and a lot of confusion, and if I can assist in anyway to make my work place and hometown a safer place, I'll do it. In honor of MLK, I'll continue to stand up for equality among my neighbors and peers. We have a ways to go, but look at the strides our country has made so far. I'm going to try and help, one Montanan at a time...
A few miles south, out in the ranch land, likes Chico Hot Springs Resort. A lovely place, that I'm embarrassed to admit, I had never visited before (even after being a Montanan for something like 23 years). I got a lot of flack for that from friends! The reason for my trip was for a winter wedding of two friends. I'm a sucker for a wedding, and if it is amongst the diamond crystals of a snowy winter---even better!

The roads were questionable and after seeing seven wrecks only a handful of miles out of town, I definitely thought of turning around. But I just kept keeping on. The fog rolled in and out, the snow fell, the sun appeared, the roads froze, the traffic thinned, and after four hours I was there. Arms a bit shaky from battling the wind.
My choice of room was the least expensive variety, which put me in the lovely original lodge at Chico, built in 1900. No TVs, no phones. No bathroom either, except a few down the hall. It was rustic, but beautiful, and I slept well on my antique iron bed.

The rest of the weekend was spent wandering both Chico and Bozeman. I did some shopping, went to the Museum of the Rockies (had to buy my sister a dinosaur souvenir) and drank a lot of good coffee.

Upon returning to the resort, I sidled up to the bar, ordered a Bud and watched the Bronco game with the locals. This was some of the best fun of the trip! Met some great people until it was time to go get dolled up. I chose my favorite Armani dress and simple accessories and walked carefully down the snowy sidewalk to the ceremony.

The bride's colors were black and silver and white. The whole affair was very elegant, with flickering candles, silver mercury glass and lots of white feathers. The ceremony was sweet and personal. The couple smiling at one another and laughing. Lovely!

The reception was a joy, with a lot of great food and wine and company. Delicious cake and a big dance floor! The speeches were sweet, the first dances were heartfelt and the party just got better and better. As the night slowed down, we were given scratch-off tickets as favors and we all feverishly scratched away at the bar hoping for winnings!

Early the next morning I bed adieu to the lovely resort and headed home through the cold. (Mind you it was about 5 degrees each day). It felt good to get out of town---and out of my comfort zone! Attending a distant wedding alone is not an easy task for a gal, but I made the most of it! (Thankfully I had friends in attendance and even knew the photographer from grade school!)

Ahh, Montana love. Doesn't get any better!
It reflects off the frozen fields like fire and lights up the mountains with the most glorious alpenglow. This frigid land has many moments of sheer beauty!
Oh how I miss the ocean! I've always wanted to go in the winter, when the storms hit. I want to hunker down under a cozy blanket, with a cup of coffee and watch the waves. Maybe someday I'll be able to own something like this:

Running around and leaving very little time for maintaining my home. It's time for me to slow down and go tend to my nest! I need to do some major organizing in the next few weeks.

Project 1: Jewelry collection! After all the events and parties of the holiday season, my jewelry collection is tangled into one ball. Necklaces are laced through earrings, rings are lost all together in the jumble. Time to separate them all, and put them back in their places so I can find exactly what I need when the mood strikes!

Project 2: Laundry room! Oh what a disaster this has become! Time to organize all the comforters (thank you Space Bags!) and clothes. It'll feel so good to go into the basement and have this place all cleaned up. Just gotta watch out for the spiders while I straighten!

Project 3: Holiday decor! There's an area of my basement specifically for holding all of my holiday stuff. Well, in the hurry of the last season, the boxes and bags have slowly crept further and further out of their designated area. I now have a Christmas tree mingling with the Easter bunnies, a Halloween ghost sharing space with the Pilgrims...time to organize, stack neatly, and breathe a sigh of relief at how easy it'll be to decorate for the next holiday in February.

Hopefully getting these items done will give me some mental relief! Nothing feels better than getting your ducks in a row. Wish me luck!

All the necessary equipment for skiing in the new year!

This year, the sister and I decided to ring in the new year in the mountains. Skiing has proven to be one of our favorite ways to celebrate New Years Eve--and most resorts have events that night too. We were treated to night skiing and then a fireworks show!

Before we even made it to the ski hill, we stopped off in Glacier to run an errand. We ended up wandering around the snow, sipping champagne and taking pictures. This park is gorgeous in the winter! Then we headed up to Whitefish.

After an evening of night skiing, we were treated to a torch light parade on the mountain and glorious fireworks. We headed back to the hotel late for more champagne and to watch the ball drop. What a simple celebration this year! Just me, my sister, and the mountains. Perfect!
It was a long time coming! It started to drift down on Friday and I couldn't be more excited. Though I'm out on the highway today for work, and it'll slow me down, I'm still excited for all the beautiful vistas I'll get to see. Snow makes everything different and wonderful.
Yep, this weekend my sister and I welcomed a new fuzzy friend into our lives. Meet Petzl! After looking at many cats in the local shelters my sister fell in love with this little tortoise shell. She's 2 years old and spunky. So much fun already! We've begun the slow process of introducing her to my cat who already lives here. Hopefully they'll become fast friends!
Might ask why the name Petzl? Well our little fuzzball loves to climb and leap. Reminded me of this company: PETZL, who's motto is "for the vertical world." She's definitely our cat for the vertical world!
My best friend and I would pour over the pages of that catalog and count up our change and allowance to see what we could buy. Truth is, they weren't cheap, and we didn't get very far. That's one reason that it was a really big deal when one year I unwrapped an Alison doll on Christmas morning. Oh the joy! My parents had actually bought one. I loved that doll and took care of her like the treasure she was.

And then I grew up. I put her in a box for safe-keeping. Stashed her in my parent's attic, moved out, and moved on.

Until recently.

I'm not sure why it got back in my head. Why those days of being a little girl suddenly were so interesting again. Maybe it's because that same old best friend is back in my life and these dolls were a big part of who we were and how we bonded. Either way, all I can think of now is Magic Attic.
Thank God for Ebay!

Though not as common as American Girl, Magic Attic items pop up often enough and I giggle every time something knew is posted. Every dress and accessory that gets listed reminds me of the pages of those catalogs and all the dreaming that went with them. And now that my "allowance" is a little bigger (sure nice to have a paycheck!) I can actually start buying the outfits I never got.
I recently went up to the parent's attic and searched through the boxes. There, dressed in her tight-rope walking circus outfit (an all time favorite) I found my doll. She now sits in the living room in my new place and makes me smile. Getting those little outfits in the mail make me grin and feel like a kid again. That same excitement and anticipation is there. I feel like I'm 10 again. And it's wonderful. :)
A treat every year! My sister and I went up to a saloon outside of town for our first Halloween festivities on the 27th. We went as the brother duo Thor and Loki. The cowboy crowd that was the majority up there weren't sure who my costume was, but they liked it anyway. They just figured I was an elk with my gold horns and seemed OK with that. Oh well! Had a great time and met some very cool new friends. We drank fancy spirits, two-stepped to a live band and warmed up by a huge bonfire. We were clever enough to rent the last available cabin so we didn't have far to stumble that night before falling into a deep Midgardian slumber. :)
For the actual Wednesday of Halloween, I enjoyed surprising coworkers with cute packages of candy and made a lot of folks smile with my cat ears on my head. Employee kiddos were allowed to come through the building and trick or treat so I had a black cauldron of goodies waiting. Set up the house later to be warm and welcoming with orange lights and lots of candles and the costumed wee ones started knocking on the door around 7:30. It was an unusual year here because it was so warm! Temps in the 60s! Normally it snows! The kids were lucky this year! After the last tired goblins went home, my sister and I put on the make-up, did our hair, and donned our Godly-costumes once more. People watching downtown was a blast with so many creative costumes this year! I love seeing what folks come up with! It was a splendid night spent with splendid people! And now, it's time to take down the jack-o-lanterns and put up the Thanksgiving wreath. Already itching for the next holiday! :)
It's latest shape is in the form of a distillery (and is one of my favorites yet!). We keep adding breweries to our city like mad, but distilleries we don't have. I have enjoyed watching them develop the site from afar (i.e. facebook) but finally got a look inside on Saturday.

Through double glass doors, under a large "M" made of antlers, you enter the Montgomery Distillery. The tasting room is alive with rich fabrics and dark woods. A huge bar holds shelves of silver-labeled bottles and leather-wrapped flasks. An antique cash register reflects in the mirror. The feel is tasteful, classy, modern, and welcoming. Their personnel are kind, their cocktail menu is delicious. This place makes you smile.

I was there to participate in one of their bottling parties. I think this is awfully clever. Civilians get to come learn about the distillery and have a hand in the bottling, while the company gets a lot of eager, cheap labor! Perfect! Both parties leave happy! I got a tour of the basement which included the explosion-proof mill, all the holding tanks, and the beautiful stills. They are a steam punk dream!

The whole facility is clean and crisp and organized. It feels a little clinical, but I think that it should! I also have to admit I felt at home--all those stills and supplies reminded me of my laboratory! Ah, is there a more perfect mix? Chemistry and spirits! I'm in love!

We were introduced to the multi-step process of bottling and I chose my station: filler o' vodka. To my right was the gal who pulled bottle after bottle off the pallet and blew out the dust inside. I filled 'er up with that liquid sunshine which is known as wheat vodka. Made sure the customer didn't get short changed and each one was 750ml, I passed them on to the cork man. Labels were added next by a table of ladies and then into the boxes to be taped up for distributing. We put together 759 bottles!

When the bartender talked to me in the tasting room when I first arrived, she said that the process was very therapeutic, and she was right. The tasks were calming and fun. I also have a taste for the mundane and tedious (hello I'm a chemist) so it was even better. I'll admit it felt pretty cool to be the one to fill those bottles that would later find their way into the hands of customers. That my handwriting adorned some of those labels proudly stating this was "batch no. 4." Maybe I'm just easily entertained, but it was a great afternoon!
We were rewarded with pizzas from a great restaurant next door, and each given a free t-shirt on the way out. It brought together a bizarre group of people and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Actually, I've already signed up for three more parties! Maybe someday I can work at a place like this!
Lots of orange and yellow, some black velvet and pumpkins. I'll continue to add more touches as October continues on, but this year I'm trying to stay classy. :) Simple, chic, golden and cozy. (I'll have to up the spook-factor nearer to the 31st) but right now I'm loving it!
There's more to that story for sure, but that's hers to tell. ;) Either way, she came home a few weeks ago with a bright blue, water proof cast on her arm. Wasn't too terrible until it started to itch. You could find her with a chopstick wedged halfway into the material hoping for some relief! I did some research and on another very old blog (she hasn't updated in years) I found an answer. Cetaphil!

This is a type of gentle cleanser you can find most places like Walgreens. It is designed so that it does not have to be washed off the skin. That's the key! The light residue kills the itch! All excited, we went and bought a bottle from our neighborhood grocery and got to work. We dribbled some of it down the cast and washed it the rest of the way with the shower head. We let the water run through the end a little and then stopped rinsing. We wanted to leave some in there! Guess what? No more itching! The chopstick went away and she's been much happier since.

The other day she warned of what happens when you put too much in though...it oozes through the cast! She had a slightly embarrassing day at work trying to control the soapy, goo that was emanating from her right arm. Whoops! At least it smelled good!

So, if you know someone with an itchy cast, have them try the Cetaphil idea! It's the only remedy we've found that works. Just don't use too much! ;)
Red and yellow leaves are making a shy appearance, even as the days top of still at 80 degrees. Our wildfire smoke is less these last few days, making it enjoyable to be outside. The sun shines through with a brighter light and everything has been glowing. :)
Years ago this young student, Jesse, joined the lab I was working in one summer. He was pretty cool and we've thankfully kept in touch since then! He has always been an inspiration with his world travel, amazing outdoors-man skills, and more recently his filming. This guy knows what he's doing! Specializing in time lapse and areal imagery, his film techniques are breathtaking, and he's started Spaulding International Cinema. It has been a hoot watching him become this amazing professional, and seeing what videos and images he'll present next.
His latest project is a pilot episode for a series him and his girlfriend (now fiance!!) are putting together about the history of hunting: Hot on the Trail. (And not just your Montana style elk hunts. We're talking all over the globe, the history of and the cultural ties to this endeavor.) Pretty cool, huh? I'm excited!
Their Facebook page is continually updated with information about the series: Hot on the Trail

Of course, beautiful projects like these require some funding, which is why he's set up a Kickstarter account to try and garner enough dough to get them off and running. Please check out their sneak peek video and consider donating some funds. Every little bit counts! So it doesn't matter how big or small. They only have a few days left to gather their donations from this site. It's all or nothing, so they need all the people they can get!
As a proud 2008 alum I attended our annual homecoming parade with my parents this year. I wasn't able to go to the football game (tickets are hard to get for staff!), but I enjoyed the school spirit and festivities. Dressed in Griz wear we descended on Higgins Ave. to watch the biggest parade to date. My high school band went by, then the UM alumni band with a few old teachers that I adore, the Forester's float (which is always funny), the Shriners in their tiny cars, our Japanese sisters school's band complete with dancers and feathers, and our family favorite: The Red Wave. In middle school band, there aren't enough kids to march per school, so they combine ALL the middle schools into one huge marching band. You practice marching for weeks in Missoula neighborhoods and then all decked out in red T-shirts you cruise the parade route. It was fun as a kid, and still fun to watch now. :)
Though, in reality, they're all usually quite unrequired. Still fun to window shop though, eh?

First up is this amazing duvet and pillowcase set from IKEA. The colors and design are lovely!

Next is this new houndstooth dress from ShabbyApple. Wow! I have a gift certificate here and I may be spending it on this little number. :)

Halloween shoes! Seems odd? I just love the wacky and awesome designs they come up with that they sell at Spirit Halloween stores. I'd wear some of these way more often than just Halloween!
